About Us
We're a mixed bunch of riders from epic XC to full on DH, but the main thing that unites us all is the belief that putting some effort into digging and diplomacy can make the future of mountain biking even better.
Wharncliffe Riders Collective is affiliated to Singletraction and IMBA and work using their standards of sustainable, natural trails that cause minimum disturbance to the landscape and give maximum fun on the bike.
Whats Happening at Wharncliffe ?
Wharncliffe Woods is a steep and rocky wood situated on the Northern fringes of Sheffield. It has been home to an underground downhill scene for a number of years and is famed for its super technical rocky drops and being the training ground for Steve Peat. The wood is also popular with the trail riders, seeking out some of the fantastic woodsy technical single track, and getting very lost in the process.
A group of local volunteers (Wharncliffe Riders Collective) are now working with the full support of the Forestry Commission to develop the riding in the woods, working on two fronts, a brand new XC trail, and the development and improvement of the DH trails.
XC Trails
A new route contouring through woods has been planned, which should be about 16 km (10 miles) long, very nearly all on new trail. The aim is to create a trail that can be ridden by an intermediate rider, but provide enough optional technical features and sections to make even the most skilled riders want to come back for more each time. In the past year the first kilometre has opened and work is progressing rapidly.
Down Hill Tracks
There are a number of DH trails in the woods, as there is no official support for these and no maintenance or development programme they have suffered from erosion, trail spread and user conflicts where the trails exit onto existing rights of way. Working with the FC, local riders are planning to create a high quality well managed venue for DH riding. By tackling the erosion, and giving the trails some TLC, dealing with user conflict issues, grading and signing the runs to ensure everyone is safe and knows what to expect, we hope to bring Wharncliffe into the open as one of the best places to get your gravity thrills in the UK.
